What is Ayurveda and Why Does It Matter?

What is Ayurveda? What does it mean to be “Ayurvedic?” How do you even say “Ayurveda?” (psst… It’s “ai·yr·vay·duh”)

Let’s just get into it, shall we? Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word consisting of two smaller Sanskrit words- “Ayus/Ayur” and “Veda/Vidya.” Ayus translates to life, living, being, existence, vitality, health, power, human, and various forms of those translations depending on the context in which it is used. Veda or Vidya, on the other hand, translates to science, truth, wisdom, art, knowledge, knowing, study of, and so forth. When these two powerful root words combine and form “Ayurveda,” so do their varied translations. Ayurveda can literally translate to any combination of those two words, such as:

  • the science of life

  • the truth of living

  • wisdom of being

  • art of vitality

  • knowledge of health

  • knowing of existence

  • study of power

  • and any other combination that you want to make of their many definitions.

While Ayurveda has been recorded over the last 6,000 years, it itself is timeless, as old as creation itself. Unlike most medical and scientific systems today, Ayurveda has quite literally stood the test of time. In fact, many different schools of healing therapy popular today have their roots firmly planted in Ayurvedic Philosophy.

Practices such massage, physiotherapy, fasting, plastic surgery, psychiatry, functional medicine, nutrition, herbal remedies, polarity, kinesiology, yoga therapy, shiatsu, mantra, meditation, color and gem therapy, and more can be connected to an Ayurvedic equivalent.

Alright so you answered a resounding "YES!" to every question above and are now eagerly awaiting to see how Ayurveda is the ultimate path... am I right? Well you don't have to wait any further, here are the top 5 reasons Ayurveda is unlike anything you have ever tried before:

Individualized holistic way of life

Ayurveda not only dismisses the “one-size-fits-all” or “pill for every ill” approach to wellness, but gives a precise blueprint on how to uniquely maximize your health and happiness on a cellular level. By understanding that every aspect of life- physical, emotional, social, environmental, behavioral, spiritual, universal, etc., it can help us to learn how to juggle a healthy balance between them all. Beyond that, Ayurveda understands that we are ultimately healthy when our mind, body, AND soul are all in perfect harmony, whereas, Western Medicine is still treating the human mind/body complex as separate functioning systems. By knowing how to address the many nuances of being human in unison with the natural and environmental factors around us, Ayurveda is the most complete wellness system that has ever existed. It not only helps you understand who you are, but also empowers you with the wisdom of what you need to do to take care of yourself (any your family)!

Heals and prevents disease

The most classical Ayurvedic text describes Ayurveda's sole purpose as “restoring the health of one who is sick and maintaining the vitality of one who is healthy.” ...and it does just that, in a beautifully simple yet concise way. Ayurveda recognizes that we are not only a product of our environment, but we are also of the environment, or universe, around us. In the Vedic system of Sankhya (click here to read that article), it discusses the philosophy of “Loka-Purusa Samya,” or the macrocosm-microcosm continuum. The word “Loka” translates to universe or outer world, “Purusa” is a human being or individual, and “Samya” means equality or resemblance. In other words, human beings (as well as other life-forms on earth) are exact replicas of the universe around us, and Ayurveda teaches us how to utilize that to our advantage for ultimate health, happiness, and vitality. When we can understand our own individual nature and allow it to live in tune with the nature around us, we have achieved unwavering health and happiness. And when we pass on this wisdom, we create it for generations to come. It really is that simple, yet we seem to live in a society that is conditioned into believing that if it is not complicated and inaccessible for the general public, it can’t possible be true or correct. But, we know better than that, don’t we?

Root cause approach

Rather than merely focusing on treating symptoms individually as they arise, Ayurveda works to resolve the underlying cause of all the symptoms, ultimately eliminating and preventing all ailments along the way. Because Ayurveda believes there is no “one size fits all” mentality when it comes to nature, life, or medicine, there is also no "average patient” or standard medical treatment. As said above, Ayurveda takes everything into account– lifestyle habits, dietary choices, bodily functions, schedule, relationships, work environment, and more –and seeks out any possible trigger causing you to be unhealthy. But further than that, it seeks to strengthen your vitality to the point that you can withstand any trigger in the future without worrying about a negative consequence or risk of relapse. A great example of this how I have helped so many people overcome their life-long migraines, and even though they all came to me with similar complaints, every single one of them left with a completely different plan and unique recommendations. Ayurveda sees the patient, not their disease.

Natural and simple protocols

Have you ever heard of the term "crunchy mom?" If so, then you can consider Ayurveda the crunchy mom of all medical systems. In an age where chemicals and preservatives are added to everything we touch and consume, it is refreshing to know that there are still health systems that believe in the healing power of whole foods, herbs, spices, movement, and mindset. When implementing Ayurvedic principles into your life, you will quickly learn that you don't need to have an arsenal of OTC drugs or lotions, or even those essential oils, vitamins, and superfoods you've been sold on. You learn how to maximize your digestive capacity and adjust your food choices to get your complete nutrient intake. You discover how plants, herbs, flowers, and spices can be utilized as potent medications. You begin to understand how intentional movement, breath, and mindset practices can truly transform you. You instead fill your tool box with the wisdom, know-how, and skills to withstand what life throws at you rather than constantly fight the symptoms and life-lessons it throws out at you. You open yourself up to a way of health and happiness that doesn't come with a list of potential side effects, only benefits.

Because Ayurveda focuses on simple, manageable changes, it can easily be implemented into anyone’s lifestyle, no matter their financial situation. Recent studies have even found that people who cook their food at home are more likely to be healthy than those that eat out, even if it's at a high-quality restaurant. You may actually be surprised to find that many of the recommendations that come from Ayurveda could be purchased on a government food program. While most of the new-age natural health systems depend on their superfood powders, rare fruits, and over-priced supplements to work, Ayurveda keeps it minimal and potent, using items you can find at your local market. From simple ingredient swaps and lifestyle changes, the Ayurvedic lifestyle can be very accessible once you realize you don’t need to buy 99.9% of the stuff being marketed to you.
